Sky Island Forest & Sky Island Storyboard, Arts Itoya Artist Residency Exhibition

25 - 26 May 2019

Sky Island Forest & Sky Island Storyboard are part of the Sky Island series, together, they formed a site specific installation art to create an imaginary space.

Sky Island Forest is inspired by the Takeo Town's ancient sacred Camphor Trees (3000 years old), forests and mountains where priests and monks used to train around this vicinity. Over the millennia, the locals continue this ongoing coexistence relationship between nature, human and the divine, become their cultural heritage of everyday life. This installation aims to create an imaginary perceptual space that blurs the boundaries between this relationship.

Sky Island Storyboard is a fusion of traditional Southeast Asia shadow puppetry and Japanese Shoji Art with reference to modern day storyboard style, depicting the legendary Sky Island narratives. Japanese cultural practice of utilitarian and aesthetic elements are incorporated with Southeast Asia puppetry's illustrative and shadow play elements in this artwork. It can be easily re-assemble and used as Shoji, interacts with the nature harmoniously; the colour and lighting changes along with its surrounding environment.
