Sky Island Forest & Sky Island Storyboard
Arts Itoya, Japan. 25 - 26 May 2019
𝗦𝗸𝘆 𝗜𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 & 𝗦𝗸𝘆 𝗜𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆𝗯𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱 are part of the 𝗦𝗸𝘆 𝗜𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀, together, they formed a site specific installation art to create an immersive space.
𝗦𝗸𝘆 𝗜𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 is inspired by Takeo Town’s ancient sacred camphor tree, Ohkusu (over 3,000 years old), and its spiritually rich forests and mountains. Over millennia, the local community has sustained a living coexistence between nature, humanity, and the divine, shaping a cultural heritage embedded in everyday life. This installation creates an imagined perceptual space where the boundaries between nature, humanity, and the divine are playfully dissolved.
𝗦𝗸𝘆 𝗜𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆𝗯𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱 is a fusion of traditional Southeast Asia shadow puppetry and Japanese Shoji Art, infused with a modern storyboard approach. This artwork depicts legendary narratives of the Sky Island, integrating Japanese utilitarian and aesthetic elements with Southeast Asian puppetry's illustrative and shadow play techniques. Designed to be versatile, it can transform into a Shoji screen, interacting harmoniously with its environment. The artwork adapts to changes in lighting and surroundings, offering viewers an ever-evolving visual narrative that resonates with cultural traditions and contemporary storytelling.
