Colours of Clay 土の色

Colours of Clay Series 土の色 explores the natural colour, texture, and material qualities of four Japanese clay bodies encountered during the artist residency at Arts Itoya - 梅崎 (茶) Umezaki (Yellow), 梅崎 (赤) Umezaki (Red), 信楽 Shigaraki and 黒泥 Kokudei.

Through painting, sculpture, and installation, the works investigate clay not merely as a medium for construction, but as an active material with its own inherent qualities and agency. Guided by material inquiry, each work reveals the dialogue between intention and material response, embracing variation, unpredictability, and the distinct identities of each clay body. This exploration is further expanded through the introduction of paper, where the interaction between paper and clay opens new possibilities for sculptural, installation-based, and interdisciplinary practice.
